As an out-of-pocket payer you have more control over your treatment than when using your insurance. You control the modality of treatment provided, the frequency, length and duration of therapy. You also have total assurance that the insurance company will not have access to your clinical records, which when using insurance they reserve the right to view your clinical information.

Insurance companies also require a formal mental health diagnosis in order to deem mental health services as medically necessary. However, many people desire therapy services for life issues and challenges that don’t require a mental health diagnosis. Additionally, having a diagnosis could have long-term effects on an individual’s life. For example, it could be considered a pre-existing condition and raise costs of coverage in the future for health or life insurance policies.

It may be surprising but there is research to demonstrate that when individual’s pay for their treatment, it increases treatment efficacy.
